Prosser, WA

After a great stay in Gig Harbor we made a 4 hour run yesterday and are now at Wine Country RV Park in Prosser, WA. arriving just after 1pm. The cool temps of the Oregon coast are now hisory for this trip as we now are in the low 90's and get to crank up the A/C's.

Shortly after setting up we took Bailey to the vet to get her checked out for diarrhea with some blood. Vet's diagnosis is stress colitis (probably when we were gone for 8 hours on day trip to Seattle) and have meds and will be on a soft diet for awhile.

We did a wine tasting here at the Park last night and got some great info on the area from a couple we met. Tonight the 4 of us are going out for prime rib at one of their favorite restaurants here in Prosser.

Itinerary is changing a bit when we depart next Thursday.

Gig Harbor, WA

Yesterday we made a nice 2+ hour run up to the Seattle area and arrived at Gig Harbor RV Resort just after 1:00pm.

You would not think that being in a major metro area as Seattle/Tacoma is there would be an RV Park that is secluded in a forest of pines.

Great so far and are putting a list of places together we want to visit including taking the ferry out of Bremerton across the inlet to Seattle. Once arriving we'll visit the world famous Pikes Place Market, Space Needle, Ivars Fish Bar, take a Duck boat tour and whatever else we can.

Hoquiam, WA

Had a great stopover in Tillamook staying at the Elk's lodge campground. Met some nice RVers and enjoyed a nice dinner last Friday at the Lodge.

Yesterday we made a 4 hour run up the coast into Washington and arrived at Hoquiam River RV Park around 1:30pm. We have a beautiful site on the river and will post pics later today.

We leave Thursday for Gig Harbor, WA in the Seattle/Tacoma area.

Trust everyone is fine.

Tillamook, OR

Yesterday, the 9th, we made a 2:45 run that only covered 67 miles. Why so long and only 67 miles? Lots of small seaside towns along the way and a very curvy HWY 101 along the coast.

This trip through the area we are staying at a campground (21 sites with full hookups) owned and operated by the local Elk's Club #1437. Nice quiet setting about 4 miles from their Lodge which we will visit. We will be here for 4 nights before heading up into Washington.

History

The city is named for the Tillamook people, a Native American tribe speaking a Salishan language who lived in this area until the early 19th century.

Anthropologist Franz Boas identifies the Tillamook Indians as the southernmost branch of the Coast Salish peoples of the Pacific Northwest who were separated geographically from the northern branch by tribes of Chinookan peoples. The name Tillamook, he says, is of Chinook origin, and refers to the people of a locality known as Elim or Kelim. They spoke Tillamook, a combination of two dialects. Tillamook culture differed from that of the northern Coast Salish, Boas says, and might have been influenced by tribal cultures further south, in northern California.

Historically, the Tillamook economy has been based primarily on dairy farms. The farmland surrounding the city is used for grazing the milk cattle that supply the Tillamook County Creamery Association's production of cheese, particularly cheddar, gourmet ice cream and yogurt, and other dairy products. Approximately one million people visit the cheese factory (located north of Tillamook on Highway 101) each year.

There is also a large lumber industry that is experiencing a comeback from the replanting that followed the Tillamook Burn forest fires of the mid-20th century. Burned remains of some of the trees can still be found in the forests surrounding Tillamook.

Tillamook also serves tourists on their way to the ocean beaches and as a location for second homes.

Newport, OR

After a wondeful stay on the Pacific at Charleston/Coos Bay we traveled up to Newport on the 7th.

Staying for 2 nights at the Port of Newport RV Park before heading up to Tillamook.

The Port of Newport is located on the central Oregon coast in the City of Newport, Lincoln County seat and major business/economic hub of the area, and encompasses approximately 59 square miles and has an estimated population of 10,800 persons. Port boundaries reach north to Otter Rock, east up to six miles inland, south to Seal Rock, and west to the Pacific Ocean. Commercial and sport fishing, fish processing, shipping, tourism, recreation, and lumber and wood processing are the area’s major industries.
